Spiritual Companioning through Spiritual Direction
Spend time one-on-one with someone trained to companion you on your spiritual journey.
The Selah community includes many who have invested in extensive training and formal certification to develop the listening awareness, skills, and experience to come alongside those earnestly seeking to encounter and engage God on their life journey.
Spiritual Direction is a tittle given to those who have been trained in the discipline of companioning others on their spiritual journey. “Spiritual Direction” is an age-old term for this unique calling, but in our contemporary times it is a misnomer if it seems to indicate that someone is directing another on their spiritual journey. In actuality it is more like inviting someone to listen in with you as you explore the possibilities of God’s nudges and movement in your life, story, and everyday experiences.
What is spiritual Direction?
Despite popular beliefs, the journey through life was not designed to be solo. Through all the ups and downs, the twists and turns, the bright patches and shadows, you need not journey alone. Spiritual Direction is the simple gift of a companion’s presence that offers you the gentle and tenacious encouragement to become more aware of God’s loving presence and to co-discern God’s activity in every aspect of your life. The focus is on spending a designated amount of time with an intentional spiritual companion who will engage their training to prayerfully journey with you through having dialogue, listening together, asking questions, experiencing quiet moments, reflecting on life and more… all in the way of Jesus.
As Selah, we strongly encourage personal and or group spiritual direction and are glad to suggest various spiritual directors we have befriended. If you are looking for a spiritual director or are interested in exploring the possibility of spiritual direction, please Contact us and we will be glad to talk further with you. Typically spiritual directors are available to meet once a month, or as often as you deem necessary. Often a fee is suggested in consultation with you that usually is based on a sliding scale according to your unique circumstances. Further details are decided directly between you and the spiritual director of your choice.
What Can You Expect in Spiritual Direction?

Develop The Core Christian Contemplative Practices
The Selah Community has embraced six core contemplative practices that have risen to prominence out of the contemporary Christian contemplative movement. Here you can find a basic format and brief guidance for these core practices: Breathing Prayer, Consciousness Examen, Prayer of Imagination. Lectio Divina, Centering Prayer, and Welcoming Prayer.
It takes time to develop these practices into the richness of experience that is possible. Besides this brief survey of the most common practices, we offer courses and accompanied practice groups to deepen our experience. Check the calendar of events for any upcoming events that can deepen your practice.
