Lent Day 23

pneuma
it’s hard to fathom
the undulating breath
like wind with the sea
circulating waves
in the rhythm of renewal
becoming then falling
rising and crashing
like thunder and lightning
in a midnight sky
Editor’s Note.
Pneuma is an ancient Greek word for “breath” and, in a religious context, for “spirit” or “soul.” It has various technical meanings for medical writers and philosophers of classical antiquity, particularly in regard to physiology, and is also used in Greek translations of ruach רוח in the Hebrew Bible, and in the Greek New Testament.
In classical philosophy, it is distinguishable from the psyche, which originally meant “breath of life” but is regularly translated as “spirit” or, most often, “soul.” –Debora Buerk, Editor
“Steve McPhail was a Selah Companion since 2018.
He brought joy to those who crossed his path.
And what is most clear is how much he loved God,
praying for those around him to find the same freedom
and love he experienced.”— Mary Pandiani, Executive Director, Selah Center
Here & Now dedicates the Lent & Easter series to Steve’s memory.
We invite you to post a tribute to Steve for his family in the
comments box below.
