22. The Christmas Story.

The First Nations Version of the New Testament tells the story of Mary (Bitter Tears) and Joseph (He Gives Sons) journeying from Nazareth (Seed Planter Village) to Bethlehem (House of Bread) for a census at the orders of the Romans (People of Iron). Unable to find lodging, Mary gives birth to Jesus in a sheep cave. That night, shepherds witnessing a great light see spirit-messengers announcing the birth of the “Chosen One”. They visit Mary and Joseph, then spread the news about the child’s birth.

Day 15. Shepherds.

“Shepherds” is the first part of a trilogy by Kathleen Heppell, telling an embellished tale of how lowly shepherds, on receiving the news of Jesus’s birth by an angel, visit the stable to worship. Remaining joyful despite skepticism, they spread this divine news.

Day 8. Walking in Darkness.

Sandy Shipman recounts a challenging but beautiful hike in Arches National Park in the pitch dark, which serves as a metaphor for darker times in life. The author relates her experiences to Advent, emphasizing endurance through darkness and the hope represented by light.
