New

Sing me something new;
not complicated, novel,
just true, that I’ll believe.

Sing something I can hum after you leave.

Sing something honest, clear, right;
something small, brilliant, bright.

Sing me something old,
not dull and ancient,
not archaic, dry, cold, but
something gold, tested over time.

Sing something deep and lasting,
resonant within its rhyme.

Sing me something rare, but
not exotic, not to scare me
into worry that I’m out here alone.

Sing me something brave,
to give me solid courage ‘til I get home.

Sing me something yours;
something close, that opens doors
between us, to let us both come in.

Sing something of the warmth beneath the skin,
something that sustains the hope
through everything;
something I can sing to you again,
when it’s my turn to sing.
